SENATOR BACIK WELCOMES INCREASED FUNDING FOR JUSTICE IN BUDGET 2015

Wednesday 15th October 2014

Speaking during a debate on policing and joint policing committees in the Seanad today, Senator Ivana Bacik welcomed the increased funding of 141 million euro in Budget 2015 since last year’s budget for the Dept of Justice expenditure, and also welcomed the 68% rise in capital funding across the Justice sector.

“I am very glad to see the announcement of 200 new recruits to the Gardai, in addition to the 100 recruits who commenced training in September 2014; and to see the securing of 10 million euro for over 400 new Garda vehicles.

“In the context of a budget which marked an end to austerity, and the first increases in public spending in a range of areas including health, education, job creation, social protection and housing construction, I also welcome these increases in the area of justice. I also strongly welcome the reforms to policing announced earlier this year, in particular the establishment of a new independent policing authority. Finally, I call for the implementation of the further policing reform recommendations made by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality in our report on a review of the Garda Siochana Act 2005, published earlier this month.”
