Statement on the death of David Trimble
25 July 2022
Labour Party Leader Ivana Bacik TD has paid tribute to the legacy of David Trimble, and extended her sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues in the Ulster Unionist party.
Deputy Bacik said:
“David Trimble made a lasting contribution to peace on our island, at great personal and political risk. His legacy is the peace agreement, which has since 1998 offered protection to generations against violence and which has allowed the building of more democratic institutions and a more peaceful society, despite many setbacks.
“Together with John and Pat Hume and others, David Trimble forged a peace agreement that has continued to guide progress through many challenges.
“The path to peace and reconciliation was not easy, and came at great political cost for David Trimble and his Party. There was much we would disagree on; but tribute must be paid to all the work that he put in to establish the structures of the Good Friday Agreement.
"May he rest in peace.”
