Residents and Staff at Sisters of Charity Facilities Deserve Fair Treatment
09 September 2020
Speaking today in response to the news that frontline healthcare workers are being denied fair redundancies at three care facilities run by the Sisters of Charity in Dublin, Senator Ivana Bacik called on the HSE and Sisters of Charity to ensure an equitable resolution for the staff employed at the facilities.
Senator Bacik said:
“I have raised this issue repeatedly in the Seanad and with the Minister for Health over recent weeks. It is most distressing to have heard about the sudden closure of three Sisters of Charity nursing homes, in which vulnerable people were resident, without any fair redundancy package for the committed staff employed there.
“I know that the Labour Court has ordered the HSE and Sisters of Charity to come to a fair conclusion, but no action has yet been taken. I am supporting staff from the facilities in their protest at 11am today outside the St. Mary’s and Caritas centres on the Merrion Road, Dublin 4, at 11am.
“I am calling now upon the Sisters of Charity and the HSE to meet with staff and their representative unions, the INMO, SIPTU and Fórsa, so that a fair severance package can be agreed for these frontline healthcare workers. They have carried out their caring roles all throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and yet they, along with the vulnerable residents of the Sisters of Charity homes, are now being left high and dry with the sudden and unexpected closure of these facilities.”
