BACIK CALLS FOR STRONGER ACTION TO STOP KILLINGS OF CIVILIANS IN GAZA
Labour Seanad leader, spokesperson on Justice, Friday 25th July 2014
Senator Ivana Bacik today called for stronger action to be taken by the Irish and other EU governments to bring about a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas; and in particular to stop the Israeli bombardment of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Senator Bacik said:
“The shelling of a UN school in Gaza by Israel yesterday, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 Palestinian civilians who were sheltering there, and the injuring of about 200 more, should be the final wake-up call for the international community. No effort should now be spared at international level in seeking to bring about a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, to stop the appalling slaughter of innocent civilians.”
“I know that Minister Charlie Flanagan has met with the Israeli Ambassador to Ireland today, and am glad to hear that he has expressed strong outrage to the Ambassador at the level of civilian casualties in Gaza – over 750, including large numbers of women and children. I am also glad to hear that he told the Ambassador that attacks by Israel on civilian institutions such as schools and hospitals are utterly unacceptable and contrary to international law, and must stop immediately.
I call upon the Irish and other EU governments to take strong action to help bring about a ceasefire to prevent any further civilian casualties and to end the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza.”
