28 September 2009
FOUR GENERATIONS OF IRISH WOMEN SUPPORT LISBON
At a press conference to be held by the Charter Group at 11am in Buswells Hotel, Molesworth Street, Dublin, on Monday 28th September, four generations of Irish women will present their reasons to support the Lisbon Treaty referendum.
The four generations will be represented by four leading feminist politicians:
Former Senator Mary Henry – the 1970s
Joan Burton TD – the 1980s
Senator Ivana Bacik – the 1990s
Councillor Maria Parodi – the 2000s
Speaking at the press conference, Senator Ivana Bacik, a Vice-Chair of the Charter Group, will say:
“Ireland has been a member of the European Community since 1973 – our membership has spanned four decades. Over that time, different generations of Irish women have benefited in many ways from our membership. As a Vice-Chair of the Charter Group, I wanted to mark the importance of the Lisbon Treaty for women, and to express our support for the equality provisions in the Charter of Fundamental Rights which Lisbon will incorporate into EU law for the first time.”
