Labour Senator Ivana Bacik has today commended the bravery of Máiría Cahill and called on the PSNI to work to deliver justice for her and all other victims of sexual abuse at the hands of the republican movement.
Speaking today Senator Bacik said:
“I welcome the findings of the PSNI in their internal investigation as it validates the bravery and commitment to justice for victims shown by Máiría Cahill.
“Since she first shared her story, Máiría has been an inspiration to everyone committed to values of transparency and fairness.
“Máiría was subjected to abuse as a child, was then revictimised by the IRA and was ultimately failed by the criminal justice system. After all this, she sacrificed her anonymity so that she could shed a light on abuse which others would wish to have kept hidden.
“I was proud to serve alongside Máiría in the Seanád and I am positive that, with her strong and proven commitment to public service, she will serve the community of Lisburn and Castlereagh very well as an SDLP councillor.”
