Labour Leader Expresses Concern at Google Job Loss Announcement
22 February 2023
Speaking today, Labour leader and Dublin Bay South TD Ivana Bacik has expressed her concern at the announcement today by Google that it plans to cut 240 staff from its Irish workforce as part of a global cutback that has seen the company lose 6 per cent of its staff.
Deputy Bacik said:
“My thoughts today are with all those individuals working for Google who are affected by this announcement, and with their families.
"The job losses will impact particularly on those employed by Google within my own constituency of Dublin Bay South where Google has a significant presence.
“While we know that the overall figure of job losses in Dublin will represent 4.3% of Google’s Irish workforce, less than the 6% cut being applied globally by Google, the figure of 240 job losses is significant and my sympathies are with all those affected.
“I acknowledge that staff have been informed, and that Google have notified the Minister for Enterprise and indeed that they have also informed local public representatives including myself.
"We have been told that the cuts are coming from sales, where 85 jobs are going, along with 80 from tech and engineering and 75 from support functions. I appreciate that consultations and talks on the way in which the cuts are to be made are set to begin this week for the required period, and I wish the employee representatives and all those involved well as they enter those crucial talks.”
