Ivana Bacik outlines key priorities as newly elected TD

After signing the register today, Labour TD for Dublin Bay South Ivana Bacik said she will prioritise key issues around housing, care, climate and community.

Deputy Bacik said:

“I want to pay tribute to my extraordinary campaign team led by Dermot Ryan and my Director of Elections Deputy Duncan Smith, and to the huge numbers of volunteers who worked tirelessly on the campaign trail. People were very engaged with this election and wanted hear how candidates proposed to address a range of serious issues. I am so honoured and grateful to have been elected to represent the people of Dublin Bay South

“The people of Dublin Bay South voted for change, particularly in a number of key areas including childcare, where I believe we need to have a Donogh O’Malley moment to ensure that every child in Ireland is entitled to a free preschool place. Change is also needed on elder care, where we need a new fair deal so that older citizens can have a choice as to where they may receive supports – not just within nursing homes but within their own homes as well.

“We also need to see change on how we approach our community amenities and how we enhance the wonderful natural facilities in the constituency. As we address the housing crisis, we need to build sustainable communities which are welcoming, and creating public space in which people may safely socialise and enjoy the many benefits of being outdoors.

Speaking in the Dáil for the first time today, Deputy Bacik raised the specific issue of renter’s rights:

“The housing crisis is having a very serious impact on health and well-being. I launched a Renters’ Rights Bill during my campaign, along with Senator Rebecca Moynihan, which would represent a radical change by addressing the key issues that renters are experiencing – security of tenure, rents and deposits, and quality of rental accommodation.” 

“Renters need a break. Government needs to realise that people are renting homes, not investment opportunities. The Government’s current policy approach deprives so many renters of the opportunity to make their place their own. This Bill would provide enhanced protections for renters’ rights and I have asked the Government to support it.”
