Government must support Labour’s Motion for Road Safety Enhancement

Local authorities need support for cycle lanes.
Labour Leader Deputy Ivana Bacik is calling for immediate action to enhance road safety across Ireland. With National Bike Week underway, the focus is on empowering local authorities to improve cycle lanes and ensuring the safety of all road users.
Deputy Bacik said:
"It is imperative that we address the pressing issues plaguing our roads, cycleways, and footpaths. Labour's Private Members Motion to the Dáil calls for a substantial increase in funding to repair damaged road surfaces. We cannot ignore the risks posed by deteriorating infrastructure any longer.
"We must implement a national inspection program to ensure that our roads, cycleways, and footpaths meet suitable safety standards. This includes a funded program of audits in every local authority to identify and rectify potential hazards.
"Local councils are being forced to stretch already thin budgets to cover the costs of repairs, leaving essential services underfunded and communities isolated. This situation is untenable and requires immediate action.”
In light of these critical issues, Labour urges the Government to support their motion and implement the necessary measures to drastically improve road safety nationwide.
"The safety of our citizens must be a top priority. We call on the Government to take decisive action and allocate the resources needed to address these pressing concerns without delay."
