Bacik requests briefing on impact of 25% trade tariffs

27 February 2025

Labour leader Ivana Bacik has called on the Taoiseach and Tánaiste to provide briefings to the Opposition on the impact of Trump’s 25% tariffs to the Irish economy.

Deputy Bacik said:

“Trump’s announcement that he seems intent on imposing at 25% tariffs on goods imported from the EU is deeply concerning.

“I welcome the fact that the Tánaiste has accepted my request to brief Opposition Leaders on the anticipated impact that this move will have on Irish jobs and the economy.

“We know that Ireland exports €72 billion of goods to the US annually, predominantly through the pharmaceuticals sector. Ireland is massively exposed to trade with the US.

“Trump has torn up the rulebook when it comes to international trade and order. The damage his administration has done to achieving lasting peace in Ukraine is immeasurable as he welcomed Putin in out of the cold last week. The latest idea will have enormous consequences for workers in Ireland.”
