Order of Business

Wednesday, 7 March 2012

Senator Ivana Bacik: Cosúil le Seanadóir Ó Bríain, ba mhaith liom cúpla focail a rá as Gaeilge i seachtain na Gaeilge. Níl go leor Gaeilge agam anois ach bhí fáinne airgead agamsa nuair a bhí mé ar scoil cúpla bliain ó shin.

Electoral (Amendment)(Political Funding) Bill 2011: Second Stage

Thursday, 2 February 2012

Senator Ivana Bacik: I am delighted to be here to speak on Second Stage of the Electoral (Amendment)(Political Funding) Bill 2011. I am particularly pleased and grateful to the Minister that the Bill is being introduced in the Seanad. It is most appropriate that it is introduced here.

The Bill will make important reforms to political donations, increase transparency in our system of political donations and place important and significant new restrictions on corporate donations. We all very much welcome those changes.

Wednesday, 20 July 2011

Senator Ivana Bacik: I join in congratulating Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh and his family on their new arrival. I welcome the new format announced by the Leader for today's discussion with the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. A question and answer session has the potential to be far more productive than the traditional set-piece speech from the Minister.

Order of Business

15th June 2011

Senator Ivana Bacik: I, too, welcome the allocation of three hours for the Second Stage debate on the Finance (No. 2) Bill 2011 and the Leader's indication that we will have an opportunity to raise several issues with the Minister. One of the issues we must discuss is how to fund the jobs initiative. I welcome Senator Darragh O'Brien's indication that the Opposition supports the initiative.

Senator Darragh O'Brien: Parts of it.

Senator Ivana Bacik: The Senator indicated he supported the concept behind it.

Senator Darragh O'Brien: The principle, yes.

Senator Ivana Bacik: I second the amendment proposed by Senator Fitzgerald calling for a debate on this most disturbing report, which is of deep concern to all of us. In 2010, with all the revelations and reports we have had, we are still seeing such immense failings in our child protection system.

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: I second Senator Ryan's request to the Leader to take No. 22 first, the Bill on consumer protection and gift vouchers. It is long overdue, as research has shown that a majority of gift vouchers are never redeemed because of the time limits. This is an important principle.

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: I support Senator Fitzgerald's amendment to the Order of Business on the basis that the Seanad should be sitting longer. Recent days have shown the need for more sitting time. Yesterday, the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill was railroaded though the House.

(Interruption in the Chamber)

Second Stage was guillotined and speakers who wanted to contribute could not do so. We were unable to give any thought to amendments on Report Stage, which is a pity. Senator Mullen already referred to the House of Lords.
