'Imprison fewer women' - by Ivana Bacik

'Women are a tiny minority in prisons and a particularly marginalised and vulnerable group. On average, only about 3-4% of those in prison are women. While prison numbers in Ireland generally have stabilised and even reduced in recent years, there have been increasing numbers of women committed to prison.'

Today I attended the launch of the Amnesty International Ireland Report on ESC Rights, 'Bringing ESC Rights Home'.
Following the launch I used the opportunity through the Order of Business to ask the Leader to arrange a debate highlighting the economic, social and cultural rights that Amnesty Ireland have reported on.

BACIK WELCOMES MINISTER FLANAGAN’S ACCEPTANCE OF LABOUR PROPOSAL
Senator Ivana Bacik, speaking as leader of the Labour group of Senators during the Seanad debate on Gaza on 31st July, called upon Minster for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan to seek a recall of the Council of EU Foreign Ministers to ensure that the EU would take stronger action to put an end to the Israeli bombardment of Gaza and to prevent any further killing and injury of civilians.

Today I wrote to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Charles Flanagan to address the horrifying situation in Gaza. Last week in the Order of Business I took the opportunity to ask the Leader to invite Deputy Flanagan, to come to the House as soon as we return in September for a debate on the situation in the Middle East.
