Order of Business

15th June 2011

Senator Ivana Bacik: I, too, welcome the allocation of three hours for the Second Stage debate on the Finance (No. 2) Bill 2011 and the Leader's indication that we will have an opportunity to raise several issues with the Minister. One of the issues we must discuss is how to fund the jobs initiative. I welcome Senator Darragh O'Brien's indication that the Opposition supports the initiative.

Senator Darragh O'Brien: Parts of it.

Senator Ivana Bacik: The Senator indicated he supported the concept behind it.

Senator Darragh O'Brien: The principle, yes.

Senator Ivana Bacik: I join my colleagues in congratulating Senator Cummins on his new role as Leader of the House. I wish the best of luck both to those who are contesting the election as well as to those who are going on to other careers. I am told there is a life after politics.

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: Like other colleagues, I will begin by expressing my condolences to the families and communities in counties Limerick and Cork for the terrible tragedies that have happened there. I echo the words of other Members who have spoken of the need to ensure the maintenance of funding for mental health services. This is without making any specific connection but all Members are conscious that this is an important priority.

Senator Ivana Bacik: I second the amendment proposed by Senator Fitzgerald calling for a debate on this most disturbing report, which is of deep concern to all of us. In 2010, with all the revelations and reports we have had, we are still seeing such immense failings in our child protection system.

Youth Unemployment: Motion.

Senator Ivana Bacik: I move:

That Seanad Éireann notes with concern the rise in joblessness in Ireland, in particular the rise in youth unemployment; and calls on the Government to implement a jobs strategy, including retraining and back to education support, to tackle this crisis.

Senator Ivana Bacik: I wish to propose the motion.

An Cathaoirleach: It has been moved and seconded. If the Senator wishes to speak to it, she has 12 minutes.

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: Some of my colleagues commented on George Lee's resignation from the other House. It will be a shame if his decision results in an increase in cynicism about politics. It is a shame he did not give politics longer than eight months. If a week is a long time in politics, eight months is a short time in which to make an impact. The question that must be asked is why he chose this course of action at this time.

Senator Bacik asks for a debate on Stag Hunting, and on the Impact of the Recent Cut-Backs

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: I support the Green Party's call for a ban on stag hunting, which is a barbaric practice. I am glad to see Green Party members standing firm on this. Senator Prendergast commented that they might wish to rename themselves “the stag party”, although that is probably not worthy of following up.

An Cathaoirleach: Could we have questions to the Leader on today's Order of Business?
