Order of Business

Wednesday, 6 July 2011

Senator Ivana Bacik: I welcome the announcement that Jerzy Buzek, the President of the European Parliament, will address the Seanad next Tuesday. That will be an auspicious occasion. Group leaders will have a chance to ask Mr. Buzek questions and there will be an interaction with him on the floor of the House. That is an important announcement.

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: Will the Leader indicate when the Immigration, Residence and Protection Bill is likely to come before the House? I am aware the legislation is still before a select committee and I understand an unprecedented number of amendments, some 700 in total, have been listed for the Bill. It is a matter of particular interest to learn when the legislation will come before the House as it is likely that we will need considerable time to deal with it.

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: Some of my colleagues commented on George Lee's resignation from the other House. It will be a shame if his decision results in an increase in cynicism about politics. It is a shame he did not give politics longer than eight months. If a week is a long time in politics, eight months is a short time in which to make an impact. The question that must be asked is why he chose this course of action at this time.

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: I support Senator Fitzgerald's amendment to the Order of Business on the basis that the Seanad should be sitting longer. Recent days have shown the need for more sitting time. Yesterday, the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill was railroaded though the House.

(Interruption in the Chamber)

Second Stage was guillotined and speakers who wanted to contribute could not do so. We were unable to give any thought to amendments on Report Stage, which is a pity. Senator Mullen already referred to the House of Lords.

Order of Business

Senator Ivana Bacik: I join my colleagues in congratulating former Senator Alan Kelly on his election to the European Parliament. Not only did he run a great campaign but he was, I think, the only candidate to have his own rap song, which I understand has become a cult classic on YouTube. I also congratulate the councillors who were elected lord mayor, particularly Emer Costello, the new lord mayor of Dublin. I concur with other Senators on the need for local government reform to ensure real powers for people in those offices.
